We ensue women are empowered and their rights respected enabling them participate fully in the decision-making processes at all levels.
The West Point Women for Health and Development Organization (WPWHDO) is a registered non-for-profit organization and accredited by the Government of Liberia. It was founded on July 16, 2002 as a local women and children’s rights advocacy organization. It was established during the time of the Liberian civil war when the rights of women and children were being grossly abused.
The West Point Women saw the act of abuse against women as a human rights violation and were totally against it. 10 women converged and with one accord encouraged each other to join forces in establishing women led and children’s rights advocacy organization to advocate for the rights of women, girls and children who were victims of SGBV & DV.
WPWHDO has a founding membership of 100 women; Including executive staff and a general membership, our membership is open to the entire community more than 2,500 women are affiliate members of the organization. The beginning founding members were 10 women initially and then grew up to 100 and more.
Presently, WPWHDO is the only institution in West Point that is fully dedicated to representing the interests of women and children in our community.
Achievements
- WPWHDO established two groups to join the fight against SGBV, “Community Male Action Group Against GBV” in the Township of West Point and Slipway Community and “West Point Anti-Drug Taskforce”.
- WPWHDO have empowered 100 women through her Village Saving and Loan Association Program.
- WPWHDO assisted over 3,000 women receive financial support for they and their children from their partners who abandoned them.
- WPWHDO has educated over 800 women through her Adult Literacy Program. The women can now read and write according to their levels and open their own bank account using their signature instead of thumb print.
- WPWHDO has rescued over 1,000 children from child abuse and trafficking. WPWHDO was instrumental in bringing relief to a family whose child was taking to Ghana with the pretense of sending her to school but rather the girl was use as a hostage without going to school. WPWHDO through her intervention the girl was sent back to Liberia.
